About

What we believe

  • We believe the Bible is the written word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error in the original manuscripts. The Bible is the revelation of God’s truth and is infallible and authoritative in all matters of faith and practice.
  • We believe in the Holy Trinity. There is one God, who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • We believe that all are sinners and totally unable to save themselves from God’s displeasure, except by his mercy.
  • We believe that salvation is by God alone as he sovereignty chooses those he will save. We believe his choice is based solely on his grace, not on any human individual merit or on his foreknowledge of our faith.
  • We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who through his perfect life and sacrificial death atoned for the sins of all who will trust in him alone for salvation
  • We believe that Jesus Christ bodily rose from the dead on the third day, showing his power over sin and death, guaranteeing hope beyond this life, including the bodily resurrection of those who put their faith in him.
  • We believe that God is gracious and faithful to his people, not simply as individuals, but as families in successive generations, according to his covenant promises.
  • We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells God’s people and gives them the strength and wisdom to trust Christ and follow him.
  • We believe that Jesus will return, bodily and visibly, to judge all mankind and to take his people to their eternal home.
  • We believe that all aspects of our lives are to be lived to the glory of God under the lordship of Jesus Christ.

We are part of the Presbyterian Church in America, a denomination with a strong vision for the gospel.
We subscribe to the Westminster Confession of Faith.

Our Vision

Our vision is to see Newmarket renewed spiritually through the gospel of Jesus Christ so that hearts, lives and communities increasingly reflect God’s love, grace and peace. We want to see Newmarket become a place where God’s grace and peace characterize every part of it.

Our vision is rooted in the good news that Jesus is the Lord, Saviour, Redeemer and coming King. We desire to see him worshiped in every part of Newmarket.

Our Values

All of the core values flow out of the gospel, the “good news” about Jesus. The gospel says that God loves and accepts me because of what Jesus has done, not because of what I do. The gospel humbles me when I see the reality that I am more flawed and sinful than I can believe, and yet it also gives me confidence when I see the reality that I am more loved and accepted that I ever dared hope.
The gospel is the good news that hearts, lives and communities can be renewed when they are impacted by the only one who has the power to redeem and transform individuals, relationships and cultures; Jesus Christ.

Prayer
Prayer connects us to God, who is powerful, gracious and personal. Only God, through his
redeeming work in his son, Jesus, can change people and communities. Prayer humbles us to recognize what God is doing and to ask him how he might use us.

In-Depth Preaching & Teaching
Preaching and teaching will focus on what the Bible says and how it applies to practical every day life today. The goal of preaching is to see how the good news of what Jesus has done is applied to one’s doubts, fears, relationships, idols, work, and play. We do not shy away from the difficult questions, but rather seek to engage them with humility and honesty.

Authentic Community
People are enabled to grow personally and be equipped to serve others. What might this look like?

  • Inviting people into community so they can experience what it means to belong.
  • Encouraging one another through prayer.
  • Comforting the hurting; celebrating the joys.
  • Sharing meals, celebrating special events and caring for those who suffer loss.
  • Sharing times of prayer, Bible study and discussion.

A growing realization of the gospel is needed to humble us to admit our own needs as well as to motivate us to care for others.

Winsome Evangelism
The goal of evangelism is to humbly and yet confidently share the good news of the gospel with everyone. Evangelism is willingly sharing this good news, not showing every body else who is “right”. Instead it is prayerfully sharing the good news of what Jesus has done. Those who have experienced the reality of that good news are motivated to share it with others.

Social Concern
God’s concern and ours is to care for the poor and vulnerable with love and generosity. A church must exhibit a true concern for the people of their community and city. Jesus did not come only to rescue individuals, but to usher in a new kingdom in which relationships with God, with others and with all of the created world are being and going to be completely restored. Serving others is a response of those who recognize how Jesus the King has come to be a servant to them at great cost to himself, so that they might be faithful servants in his kingdom.

Vibrant Worship
Worship engages people in heartfelt praise because they have been rescued by Jesus Christ. We strive to make worship accessible and understandable for people wherever they are in their spiritual journey, which includes explaining what we do and why we do it. The goal of worship is to engage hearts and minds with the gospel.

Pastor: Albert Kooy

A Little History

Albert Kooy serves as the pastor of New City Church Newmarket. While he can’t remember a time he didn’t believe in God and know about Jesus, his journey of faith has its ups and downs, including key moments when God graciously and firmly exposes his need to stop relying on his own strength and thinking he is capable to go it alone.

Married to his high school sweetheart, Mary-Ann, they have 6 children and 2 grandchildren: Peter & Jillayna(Charlie & Daphne), Timothy, Rebecca, Daniel, Michael and Carolyn. Albert loves playing and coaching sports. He also enjoys time at the cottage and around the supper table with the family.

Born and raised in Toronto, and earning degrees from York and University of Toronto, he taught high school for 9 years before leaving teaching to answer the call into the pastorate, something he said would never happen. He has since learned to use the word “never”, sparingly. For the next 5 years, he worked in Ontario and PEI as a youth pastor, while doing his theological studies.

In August 2011, the family moved to Newmarket to begin a new church plant. Throughout the fall and winter, they trained a core group and began worship services Easter 2012. Since then Albert has enjoyed loving and leading people to follow Jesus. This includes engaging with people in their questions and doubts, as well as helping people become more equipped followers of Jesus who can lead others to do the same.
